Course Description

The purpose of this program is to assist clinicians in creating and honing their attending skills as an essential foundation for therapeutic presence and client centered goals.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Articulate reasons for and psycho-spiritual theory behind the practice of empathy and attending skills; and describe three principles behind “companioning
  • Identify at least three techniques of creating empathic connections through positioning, observing, active listening and other attending skills.
  • Define at least two barriers that can impede therapeutic empathy and alternative methods for removing those barriers.
